Later, after the sun had risen to its peak in the sky overhead and the soldiers who’d died had been buried, Jase frowned and stared at the GPS display on the dashboard. No signal flashed across the top. He wrapped the little ruggedized device with his knuckles.

“Don't think that's gonna do anything, Sarge. The power’s out everywhere, remember?” Pendleton said from the driver’s seat. His helmet was off and resting on the dashboard.

“Yeah, but GPS is satellites, bro,” Smythe replied sullenly from the back seat. Watkins took his eyes off the road to look over his shoulder at Smythe.

“Okay…” Pendleton allowed. “But the signal still’s gotta come back down to earth. The places…those stations they used to track satellites. Those places don't have power.” He gestured at the GPS display. “Therefore…”

“Okay, professor, pay attention to the road,” growled Jase. “We’re not far out of Santa Fe. We should get there by tonight.

“Question is,” Gonzales asked. “What do you think we’ll find?”

Jase shook his head. “I don't know, man,” he muttered as he watched the subtle shift in the landscape from the mountainous pine forests down to the dusty scrub plateau. “I don't know.”
